Grand Blue Dreaming

Oceanside scenery, college romance, party drinking, and diving. Sounds like Spring Break in Panama right? Well, if you are looking for a feel good, slice of life, semi-comedy anime, Grand Blue Dreaming is the anime for you. In this manga turned anime, Lori Kitahara is excited to begin his freshman year of college in a town on the Izu Peninsula. He arranges to live with his Uncle, who is the owner of the Grand Blue diving shop, and upon his arrival his world gets thrown upside down. When the first thing that you see in a new town is a group of naked muscular guys playing rock, paper, scissors in your new home, you can expect things to go downhill from there. Lori quickly finds himself trapped in the Peek a Boo diving club despite not knowing how to swim, in addition to this it turns out that the dive club members tend to do a million times more drinking than diving. Throw into this a handful of pretty girls that all tend to live and/or hangout at the diving shop leads to hilarious scenarios and hours of fun.

Overall I give Grand Blue a 3.5 out of five. While it does tend to have a lot of alcohol references, naked guys (always edited BTW), and a number of sexual references, the comedic value of this piece is a young man trying to survive college, find love (despite everyone seeming to be against him doing this), and not be killed due to his friends dumb decisions and alcoholism. Do not be fooled, while there isn't anything “exposed” in this series, it is suitable for mature audiences 18+ only. If you are looking for a series that is original, will leave you laughing, and gives you helpful diving instructions (for those of us who are actually interested in diving) this series is for you!
